Description
Bolsena is a popular tourist destination thanks to its privileged position on the shores of Lake Bolsena, one of the largest volcanic lakes in Europe. The historic center of Bolsena is a charming place, characterized by cobbled streets, stone buildings and tree-lined squares. Among the main attractions of the historic center are the Cathedral of Santa Cristina, an Italian Romanesque masterpiece, and the Monaldeschi Castle, an ancient medieval fortress that offers a breathtaking view of the village and the lake. The Castle houses the territorial museum of Lake Bolsena which is part of the interesting Simulabo museum system which includes all the museums in the lake district. The museum offers important geological, archaeological and naturalistic documentation of the entire Bolsena area. A walk along the lakefront is an unforgettable experience, especially during the summer months when the area is bustling with tourists and visitors. Here you can find quiet beaches and equipped beaches as well as numerous bars, where you can taste the local culinary specialties, including eel which represents the most traditional peculiarity of lake fish. For nature lovers, Bolsena offers numerous opportunities for excursions and outdoor activities. You can go trekking on the paths that cross the Turona Archaeological Naturalistic Park, or rent a boat or canoe to explore the waters of the lake. Furthermore, boat excursions depart from the small port of Bolsena to explore the islands of the lake: the Martana and the Bisentina islands.
