Grotte di Castro is a charming village located in the Volsini Mountains, 45 km from Viterbo and near Lake Bolsena. The municipality of Grotte di Castro is a place rich in history, with roots dating back to the Etruscan-Roman age. The village is known for its necropolises, including the Cento Camere Necropolis and the Pianezze Necropolis, which have provided important finds to the city's Etruscan Museum. The historic center of Grotte di Castro is characterized by a mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Among the most interesting buildings are the Palazzo del Podestà, which houses the Archaeological Museum and Popular Traditions, and the Basilica of Maria Santissima del Suffragio, built in 1625. The latter is famous for the colored wooden statue of the Madonna del Suffragio, carried in procession during a great festival celebrated every 10 years. Grotte di Castro is also known for its traditional cuisine, which includes dishes based on potatoes, meat, fish and fresh vegetables. Among the main events in the village, the Potato Festival stands out, held in the first half of August, and the "Vivi il Lago", a festival that takes place on the first Sunday of August and includes the Panzanella Festival.
