Castiglione in Teverina, located between the Tiber and the gullies, is a charming village that shines with Renaissance light. This charming town, located on a hill overlooking the Tiber valley, is surrounded by lovingly cultivated hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see, which make it a real wine village. Among the places of interest not to be missed are the Church of the Madonna della Neve, the Collegiate Church of San Filippo and Giacomo, the Rocca dei Monaldeschi, the various Etruscan necropolises and the Valle dei Laghi Wildlife Park. A visit to Castiglione in Teverina would not be complete without a tour of the Wine Museum (Muvis) in the old Vaselli farm. Here you can admire the amazing cellar called the Cathedral and delight your palate by tasting the excellent wine of these parts, whose taste is so similar to the mild landscape that surrounds the town. The territory of Castiglione in Teverina has been inhabited since the time of the Villanovans and Etruscans. The current town was built around the year 1000 around a fortress and in 1351 the inhabitants of the destroyed Paterno were transferred there. In the Middle Ages it was a fief of the Monaldeschi della Cervara and the Savelli. Ceded to the Farnese in 1539, it was part of the duchy of Castro until 1637, when the Castiglionesi, tired of passing from one master to another, "redeemed themselves" by contracting a census of 20,000 scudi. Castiglione experienced significant events in the Risorgimento, particularly after 1860, when still being part of the Papal State it found itself less than a kilometer from the border of the Kingdom of Italy, into which it was annexed on 18 September 1870, two days before the Breccia of Porta Pia. The village is famous for its numerous festivals and events, including the Castiglione Carnival, the Santissimo Crocefisso Festivals in May, the Trebbiatura in July, the Colli del Tevere Wine Festival in August, the San Martino Oil Funghi Festival and Wine in November, and the Living Nativity in December.
