Castell'Azzara is a charming village located between Monte Amiata and Val D'Orcia, in the heart of Tuscany. This authentic center of mountain life offers visitors a true taste of local culture and history.
The village is known for its two fortresses which defend Monte Civitella, founded by Aldobrandeschi. The oldest nucleus of the town, characterized by steep and winding alleys, deserves to be explored on foot. Inside the village, a visit to the Church of San Nicola, which houses a beautiful seventeenth-century canvas from the Sienese school, and the Church of the Madonna del Rosario, which houses various paintings from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, cannot be missed.
At the top of the town stands the Rocca di Castell'Azzara, built by the Aldobrandeschi in the thirteenth century. Today, the Rocca looks more like a grand palace than a fortress, and behind it is a 19th-century clock tower.
In the surroundings of Castell'Azzara, there is the Rocca Silvana, an ancient castle of the Aldobrandeschi and strategic site for the control of the nearby cinnabar mines. From here, you can admire a beautiful panorama of the town of Selvena and the various abandoned mines, as well as the woods that cover the sides of Mount Civitella and the other hills in the area.
The territory of Castell'Azzara also hosts the Villa Sforzesca, an imposing country villa built in 1580 at the behest of Cardinal Alessandro Sforza. The whole, recently restored, preserves portals, coats of arms, traces of fortifications.
For nature lovers, the Monte Penna Nature Reserve is a protected area established in 1996 on the south-eastern slope of Monte Amiata and almost entirely covered in ash, beech and Turkey oak forests.
Another attraction not to be missed is the Grotta del Sassocolato, a natural cavity of tectonic-marine-karst origin used in the past as a sheepfold and the scene of important speleological explorations. The cave was closed in 1995 to safeguard an important colony of bats, and today it can be visited (only in summer, when the disturbance to the animals is less) with the help of the Speleological Group "L'Orso" of Castell' Azzara.
Finally, Castell'Azzara is famous for its Summer Truffle Festival, in July, which celebrates one of its symbolic products. The Amiata area is an area rich in natural forest products, such as mushrooms, truffles, strawberries and raspberries. In particular, Castell'Azzara is considered the truffle capital of the Maremma and in its woods you can find both the rarer and more expensive white truffle and the brown variety.
