Description

The village of Monterotondo Marittimo is the gateway to the characteristic Biancane Nature Park, an unmissable destination in the Tuscan Maremma. The Biancane di Monterotondo Marittimo and the "Crete Senesi" offer a unique natural spectacle: their vast expanses of rock and clay, white as snow, stand out extraordinarily from the surrounding greenery. This phenomenon is caused by powerful geothermal vapors which, emerging from the subsoil, alter the composition of the rocks, making the jaspers - usually bright red - as white as porcelain. But the real show is under your feet, where superheated fluids (reaching 200°C) freely rise to the surface, creating fascinating geothermal events called "Fumarole" and "Putizze". A magical place, where the earth shows its power in a real spectacle of nature. A visit to the park cannot be separated from a visit to the Mubia museum, which is located right at the entrance to the Biancane area, where, through interactive illustrations suitable for all ages, one can learn more about the Geopark and the natural phenomenon of geothermal energy. The village of Monterotondo is very small but equally suggestive and suitable for a walk to discover its historic buildings such as the Rocca degli Alberti and the Parish Church.
