"The village where Caravaggio died" Porto Ercole is a fraction of the municipality of Porto Santo Stefano and represents an excellent starting point for discovering the beaches and coves of the Argentario. The village is mainly divided into two areas, the tourist port downstream in the bay and the historic center perched on a spur surrounded by the walls of the Spanish Rocca. The historic center is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and is a real jewel to be discovered. Its alleys wind their way inside, connecting small squares and steep stairways that make this fortress unique in its kind. The marina represents the heart of this old fishing village and the promenade is ideal for a stroll to enjoy the maritime atmosphere and taste some local fish specialities. In the first weekend of May, the seafront is transformed for the "Night of the Pirates", a folk festival that makes Porto Ercole even more mysterious and evocative. A peculiarity of Porto Ercole is the Corsini botanical garden, an enchanted and wild garden open to guided tours which was founded in 1868 by the will of General Vincenzo Ricasoli. The bay of Porto Ercole is also known for its majestic fortifications: Forte Filippo and Forte Stella from which it is possible to admire a breathtaking view of the bay and the surrounding landscape and for one of the first private ports built in Italy: Cala Galera. The locality is known above all for the crystal clear sea and the beauty of its coves. The closest and easily accessible cove from Porto Ercole is called "Le Viste" and overlooks a small island that can also be reached by swimming, the area is also equipped to welcome visitors. To reach the other coves instead, it is advisable to take the panoramic road, a road that runs alongside the promontory and offers breathtaking views. For nature lovers there are numerous trekking routes starting from Porto Ercole to discover Monte Argentario and the best way to explore the coves of the promontory is to rent a dinghy or a small boat.
