Porto Santo Stefano is the capital of the municipality of Monte Argentario and the main port of connection to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. The town fits into a large bay of the Argentario, the colorful houses lie on the hill and the promenade connects the shipyard and the main port to the ancient port in front of the town hall in Piazza dei Rioni. Porto Santo Stefano is the ideal place to enjoy a nice walk along the sea, an aperitif at sunset or taste the fresh fish in one of the many typical restaurants. An obligatory stop for every tourist is a visit to the Fortress, built during the Spanish dominion and located at the highest point of the historic center and at Capo d'uomo, a symbol of lovers, from which you can admire a breathtaking view of the Tuscan archipelago. Argentario is known all over the world for the beauty of its coves. The crystal clear water of the Tyrrhenian Sea which creates a contrast of colors with the Mediterranean maquis and with the rocks of the promontory makes the landscape fairy-tale and unique from a naturalistic point of view. The best way to enjoy these glimpses and the surrounding panorama is to take the road called "panoramica" which surrounds the whole of Monte Argentario and connects Porto Santo Stefano to Porto Ercole. The most beautiful coves of the promontory are Cala Mar Morto and Cala del Gesso, very popular with tourists also because they are easily accessible by land. The most hidden and quietest coves can only be reached by sea, in fact renting a boat or participating in one of the many excursions that are offered is the best way to discover the beauties of the Argentario. For those who want to cool off in the sea near Porto Santo Stefano, they can go to two very famous beaches very close to the town: La Spiaggetta Del Siluripedio or Bagni di Domiziano. On the other hand, those who are looking for a little fresh air on hot days can have a unique experience on Monte Argentario by visiting the Convent of the Passionist Friars. Located in a strategic position, it has a beautiful view of the Orbetello lagoon and the two strips of sand that connect Monte Argentario to the mainland: the Giannella and the Feniglia.
