L'isola, che ha un'estensione di circa 10 ettari, ha avuto origine da un antico piccolo cono vulcanico, spentosi circa 320.000 anni fa. Secondo la tradizione su di essa fu fatta imprigionare e assassinare dal marito nel 535 d.C. la regina dei Goti Amalasunta, figlia di Teodorico. Poco più tardi ospitò una comunità benedettina, intorno a cui, nel XII secolo, si formò un borgo, che divenne libero Comune, conteso tra Orvieto, Viterbo, i Prefetti di Vico e la Santa Sede. Entrata nei possedimenti dei Farnese, che le preferirono la vicina Isola Bisentina, cominciò la sua decadenza, con l'esodo dei suoi abitanti verso Marta. Alla metà del '600 l'isola risulta pressochè disabitata. Oggi è di proprietà privata e non visitabile.
