La fontana nel cortile del palazzo che fu la sede del Governatore del patrimonio di San Pietro e oggi del Sindaco della Città, fu realizzata nel 1624 su disegno del pittore-architetto Filippo Caparozzi, detto "lo Spagnoletto". I lavori si protrassero per diversi anni e la fontana fu almeno in due occasioni, nel 1635 e 1637, danneggiata da violenti nubifragi. Lo stemma sulla vasca è quello del prelato Girolamo Grimaldi-Cavalleroni, governatore di Viterbo all'epoca della realizzazione. Nel corso dell'800 fu sottoposta a interventi di consolidamento che ne hanno in parte alterato l'aspetto; la palma con i due leoni araldici, simbolo della città, che ne orna la sommità, sono stati realizzati nel 1898 dallo scultore viterbese Carlo Jelmoni, a sostituire un'analoga scultura in bronzo andata distrutta alcuni anni prima.
