Si tratta di un imponente complesso di ruderi riferibili a un grande impianto termale di epoca romana, databile sulla base della tecnica muraria, intorno al II secolo d.C., legato a una sorgente sulfurea oggi estinta, ma ancora attiva nel '600. Al centro dell'impianto vi era una grande aula ottagona di cui oggi rimangono solo alcuni tratti, ma che era ancora perfettamente conservata ai tempi di Michelangelo, che ce ne ha lasciato i disegni della pianta e dell'elevato, oggi conservati in Francia al Musée des Beaux-Arts di Lille, già nella Collezione Wicar. Caduto in abbandono, l'edificio è stato poi spoliato di marmi e arredi: alcune colonne sono oggi visibili in piazza del Plebiscito, nel portale del Duomo e in piazza San Sisto. Scavi svolti nella prima metà dell'800 hanno individuato la presenza di altri ambienti, mosaici, busti e colonne di marmo.
