“The gateway to Tuscany” The small town of Grosseto is the southernmost capital of the Tuscan region and represents the largest inhabited center in the entire Tuscan-Lazio Maremma area. The town, also called the Gateway to Tuscany, is one of the main tourist destinations for visitors to the Maremma, for its characteristic historic center and the hexagonal walls that are still intact today. The city walls are one of the very few examples of Renaissance fortification in Italy and have been enhanced with a public park that comes alive for numerous events and shows. The heart of the historic center is Piazza Dante, surrounded by colorful buildings and arcades and in the center there is a statue in honor of Leopold II. It also houses the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo Aldobrandeschi stands out, today the seat of the provincial institutions. Another characteristic square of the historic center is Piazza del Sale which instead stands out for its nightlife. Grosseto represents an excellent destination between the sea and the hinterland, perfect for shopping in the street that runs through the entire historic centre. Once the plain of Grosseto was an immense lagoon dominated by two important Etruscan cities: Roselle and Vetulonia which today can be visited to admire the finds in the archaeological parks. The Maremma archaeological and art museum in the center of Grosseto is a recommended stop before going to the sites, as the museum traces the entire archaeological history of Maremma with particular attention to the Etruscan-Roman period and a special insight into the ancient city by Roselle. For nature lovers, a visit to the Maremma Regional Park is mandatory. In the locality of Alberese in 1075 the first protected area of the Tuscany region was established. In the stupendous wild beaches and in the naturalistic park it is possible to go trekking and excursions on horseback or by bicycle.
